Generating Sales for Capital Creatives
Hi all,
At more than one of our meetings we have had discussions along the lines of hiring someone to do sales for Capital Creatives and on having some form of seminar/workshop. Here are some thoughts that pretty much come from a combination of conversations I have had with different people including a Salesperson in the Print Industry over the past few weeks.
SalesNo one that has the kind of experience we want, either in the creative world or just in sales, is likely to take us on without some kind of base salary. My original train of thought was that if someone is confident enough that they can sell our services they should feel that a commission only form of compensation should be sufficient. Well, my sales friend turned the tables on me! He said that if we are confident enough that a salesperson can sell our services and we are confident that we can complete the job and satisfy the client and get paid, then we should show that confidence in the form of a base salary plus commission! I do understand the train of thought though, I know that I always ask for a deposit from a client for my design services. So, by giving a base salary, the salesperson is getting a deposit or retainer for his/her sales services! I know, I know... sounds like a Catch-22 to me too!
So, a salesperson along those lines is not something I'm in a position to do right now.
Next!
A Seminar and/or WorkshopIf we can put together a seminar or a workshop that would be of interest to the general public or a specific group we might be able to generate interest in our group and the services that we offer. As previously discussed we would need to come up with something that we could charge a nominal fee for that would cover our costs of doing the seminar, or create a plan for a workshop that we could charge for that would not only cover our costs but generate a bit of income for all of those of us that participate. So put your creative thinking caps on "
Capital Creatives"! Submit some ideas, and your thoughts in relation to your idea, to this blog for all of us to discuss... here's a few quick ideas of my own (I'll offer my thoughts later as a comment).
- Do's and Don'ts of Web Design
- Web site Optimization
- Reducing your costs of printing and/or advertising
- Using Creative Professionals as opposed to friends or family... or Bob in shipping!
- Web site Makeovers
- Got a New Business? How to create an identity, stationery and a web presence!
- Bringing creativity into your personal life. i.e. Digital Photography, Scrapbooking, Family Web Site, On-line Journal, Blogging.
So... there's a start for discussion... add your ideas and don't censor yourself... from small acorns grow mighty oaks!

Capital Creatives Logo

Okay... so what do you think of our logo? I think we all agree that Marc came up with a great illustration that is well suited to the group. I really love the way the Peace Tower has been simplified and how it doubles as an easel... a job well done Marc!
What is up for debate is the wordmark part or typography and the colour we're using. A one colour logo will be less expensive to reproduce outside of what we have talked about doing with business cards so that is what I have created.
My thoughts on the logo are... I like the strength of the typeface I have chosen. It compliments the round corners of the graphic yet also contrasts the sharpness of the illustration. I like "Creatives" being solid, thus stronger, as that IS what we are all about! I like the blue! Even though my first thoughts were red, I like the blue as it does look like a beautiful blue sky behind the Peace Tower... and can symbolize "the sky's the limit", with the Peace Tower pointing up it also gives a great sense of "looking up"! The only change I'm thinking of making right now is aligning "Association of Creative Professionals" so it is the same width as "Creatives" and then either centering or kerning "Ottawa" to fit under the artwork.
So - what are your thoughts Capital Creatives?
